YAPHANK, N.Y. — Residents in the quiet Suffolk County communities of Bellport woke up Saturday to news that shattered their sense of everyday safety. A 30-year-old woman lay unresponsive in a car at a local gas station just a short drive from home. Hours later, police had a suspect in custody.
Juliann Bachmann died after authorities found her injured inside a vehicle at the Speedway station on Horseblock Road around 7:25 a.m. on May 16. Paramedics rushed her to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk in Patchogue, but she did not survive. Detectives quickly concluded the death resulted from criminal action and launched an intensive investigation.
By evening, officers arrested 40-year-old Michael McHenry, also of Bellport, and charged him with second-degree murder for allegedly stabbing Bachmann and leaving her to die. He lived in the Rosemont Brookhaven apartments off Woodside Avenue, less than a mile from the gas station where the tragedy unfolded. Police took him into custody around 8:13 p.m. and announced the charges the following day.
The speed of the arrest brought some measure of resolution to a case that began as a routine welfare check but rapidly escalated. Neighbors described both Bachmann and McHenry as familiar faces in the tight-knit area, though details about their connection remain limited as the investigation continues. For many, the proximity hit especially hard — a busy gas stop that locals visit daily for fuel or coffee now carries a grim memory.
Suffolk County police have not released further information about a possible motive or the exact circumstances leading to the incident. Investigators continue to seek anyone with relevant details and urge the public to come forward. In the meantime, family and friends mourn a young woman whose life ended far too soon in what should have been an ordinary start to the weekend.
Some reports suggest the couple were involved in a romantic relationship.
