Mayor Brett Smiley called for its removal—reportedly backed by a $1 million pledge from Elon Musk.
The mayor called it “divisive,” adding a tone of moral supremacy to his decision.

Raley was fatally shot outside an apartment in Waldorf, Maryland, on July 3, 2025. Following a lengthy investigation, Shawn Lamont Wade Jr., 32, of Waldorf, was arrested on March 4 and charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, and firearm offenses, reports say. 24. On December 19, 2021, Melissa Blimkie, 25, was fatally stabbed by her boyfriend, Everton Javaun Downey, then 30, in a parking garage at a Burnaby, British Columbia, shopping mall. Downey, now 35, inflicted 15 wounds amid delusions, fled, and later surrendered to police. He pleaded guilty but was convicted of second-degree murder, receiving a life sentence with no parole for 12 years on February 16, 2026, reports say.

25. Kaley Ann Snow, 31, of Clackamas County, Oregon, was killed in 2024 by her tenant Bobby Lee Alsup, 33.
On the afternoon of March 17, Alsup struck Snow twice in the head with a hammer. He wrapped her body in a blanket, carried it to an outbuilding on the property and left it there. He poured household cleaning fluid over the remains and the weapon in an effort to destroy evidence, then discarded the hammer in a toilet and left the scene.

26. 27. Adam R. Williamson, 20, of Krotz Springs, and Dustin A. Wiltz, 20, of Scott, were fatally shot Saturday night, March 30, 2019, inside an apartment at the French Colony Apartments in Carencro, Louisiana. Jeremy Edwards, 20, of Church Point, was arrested after a police chase that ended in a crash and faces two counts of first-degree murder, reports say.
In January 2023, Edwards was found incompetent to stand trial and committed to a state psychiatric facility for treatment. On March 24, 2023, he pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in a deal approved by the victims’ families, avoiding the death penalty. FBI statistics
According to statistics provided by the FBI, 58.2 percent of homicides in 2018 were committed by blacks who comprise about 13 percent of the population. Considering that most homicides are committed by males ages 17 to 49, we estimate that about half of all homicides in the USA are committed by young black males ages 17 to 49 who comprise about five percent of the population. That same year 39 percent of homicides were committed by whites who comprise about 72 percent of the population.
According to information provided by American Renaissance, “In 2013, of the approximately 660,000 crimes of interracial violence that involved blacks and whites, blacks were the perpetrators 85 percent of the time. This meant a black person was 27 times more likely to attack a white person than vice versa.”

Annually, that’s about 566 black-on-white homicides. Divided by 12 months, the average is, again, 47 per month.
