The death of Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old woman, drew global attention when she was killed in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Aug. 12, 2017. Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, went largely unnoticed when she was fatally stabbed on a Lynx Blue Line train in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Aug. 22, 2025. Recently arrived in the United States, she was simply commuting, unaware of the risks that can accompany late-night travel in an unfamiliar American city.
Authorities identified Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, as the suspect.
