By mid-afternoon, detectives had pinpointed a person of interest at a residence several miles away on Quail Street, near Charlotte Douglas International Airport. With support from multiple police divisions and a special weapons and tactics team, officers surrounded the home and negotiated the suspect’s peaceful surrender. The 22-year-old man, identified as Sam’on Andrew Smith, emerged without resistance and was taken into custody for questioning at police headquarters.
After an interview, authorities charged Smith with murder. He was booked into the Mecklenburg County jail without bond, court records show. Police have not disclosed any connection between Lang and Smith or a possible reason for the attack, emphasizing that the probe remains active.
